“An American in Paris,” Ballet Ariel-style, takes Gershwin’s orchestral classic and a charming storyline and creates a narrative ballet. The story of a young American woman traveling to Paris for the first time is transformed by the magic and vibrancy of the magnificent city steeped in history and enveloped in romance. Gershwin’s jazz undertones create the perfect setting for her awakening. Ballet Ariel’s Director, Ilena Norton and Ballet Ariel’s choreographer, Gregory Gonzales have created whimsical and fun dances that bring to life the joys of Paris.
“Appalachian Spring” was composed by Aaron Copland, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1945. The score was commissioned for a ballet by Martha Graham with an American flavor. “Appalachian Spring” depicts the day of a wedding at a Pennsylvania farmhouse in the early 20th century as the young couple, a pioneer woman, and revivalist preacher, experience apprehension, excitement, and serenity over the course of the day. “Artistic Director, Ilena Norton, brings a fresh perspective to Copland’s enchanting and pastoral music with a fully developed narrative story that audiences find delightful. Performed on pointe, Norton’s ballet includes choreography from Gregory Gonzales, whose contemporary style integrates wonderfully with Norton’s beautiful interpretation.”
